Acute Throat Infection – Symptoms and Treatment

An acute throat infection is inflammation of the throat that causes pain, irritation and difficulty swallowing. These infections are usually caused by viruses such as the common cold or influenza, although bacteria such as streptococcus (strep throat) may sometimes be responsible.

Throat infections are common and often improve within a few days with rest and supportive care.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms of an acute throat infection may include:

• sore or painful throat
• difficulty swallowing
• redness or swelling in the throat
• fever
• swollen glands in the neck
• headache or fatigue

Some people may also experience a cough, runny nose or hoarse voice depending on the cause of the infection.

Most viral throat infections improve within about 5 to 7 days. Antibiotics are only needed when a bacterial infection such as strep throat is confirmed.
