Arthritis

Arthritis is a group of conditions that cause inflammation and damage to the joints. Joints are the places where two bones meet, such as the knees, hips, hands and spine. Arthritis can cause pain, stiffness and swelling, and may affect mobility and daily activities.

There are many different types of arthritis. Some forms develop gradually over time due to changes in the joints, while others occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms of arthritis may include:

  • joint pain
  • stiffness, especially after periods of rest
  • swelling in or around the joints
  • reduced range of motion
  • warmth or redness around the joint

Symptoms may vary depending on the type of arthritis and the joints involved.

Common Types of Arthritis

Some of the most common types of arthritis include:

  • Osteoarthritis – caused by breakdown of joint cartilage and most often affecting the knees, hips, hands and spine
  • Rheumatoid arthritis – an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation of the joints
  • Lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus) – an autoimmune disease that can affect joints and other organs
  • Gout – a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints
  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis – a form of arthritis that occurs in children and adolescents
