Asthma – Key Facts

Asthma is a chronic lung condition that affects the airways and can make breathing difficult. The airways become inflamed and narrow, which can lead to symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. More than three million Canadians are living with asthma.

Asthma symptoms may vary in severity and can occur occasionally or during episodes known as asthma attacks. These episodes happen when the airways become swollen and tightened, sometimes producing extra mucus that further limits airflow.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms of asthma may include:

  • coughing
  • wheezing
  • shortness of breath
  • chest tightness

Symptoms may appear during physical activity, at night, or after exposure to triggers.

Possible Triggers

Asthma symptoms are often triggered by environmental or health factors such as:

  • respiratory infections such as colds
  • allergens including dust mites, pet dander or mould
  • pollen and seasonal allergies
  • exposure to tobacco smoke
  • cold air or exercise
  • air pollution or chemical fumes

Management

Although there is currently no cure for asthma, most people are able to manage their symptoms with proper treatment and by identifying and avoiding triggers. Treatment often involves medications that help control airway inflammation and relieve symptoms when they occur.
