Eczema

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a common skin condition that causes inflammation, dryness and itching of the skin. It can occur at any age but often begins in childhood. Eczema is a chronic condition that may flare up from time to time and then improve.

The condition affects the skin’s protective barrier, making the skin more sensitive to irritants and allergens. As a result, the skin may become dry, inflamed and itchy.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms of eczema may include:

  • dry or rough skin
  • itching, which may be severe
  • red or inflamed patches of skin
  • scaly or thickened skin
  • small bumps that may leak fluid when scratched
  • skin that becomes cracked or irritated

The appearance of eczema can vary depending on skin tone and the stage of the condition. Itching may be more noticeable at night and scratching can worsen irritation.

Possible Causes

Eczema is believed to develop from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. People with eczema often have sensitive skin and may also have allergies or asthma. Certain triggers may worsen symptoms, including dry weather, irritants, allergens, stress or skin infections.
