Flu (Influenza) – Symptoms and Treatment

Influenza, commonly called the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness that affects the nose, throat and lungs. It spreads easily between people through coughing, sneezing or close contact.

Flu symptoms usually appear suddenly and can cause significant fatigue and illness for several days.

Common Symptoms

Typical symptoms of influenza include:

  • fever and chills
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • headache
  • muscle aches
  • fatigue or weakness
  • runny or blocked nose
  • Some people, particularly children, may also experience nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

Most healthy adults recover within about one week, although cough and tiredness may last longer.

People at higher risk of complications include older adults, young children, pregnant individuals and those with chronic health conditions.

    Preventing the Flu

The annual flu vaccine is the most effective way to reduce the risk of influenza and its complications.

Other ways to help prevent the spread of influenza include:

  • washing hands regularly
  • staying home when sick
  • covering coughs and sneezes
  • avoiding close contact with others while infectious
