High Cholesterol

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, occurs when the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries is consistently too high. Over time, this increased pressure can place strain on the heart and blood vessels.

When cholesterol levels become too high, it can build up inside the walls of blood vessels. Over time this buildup can narrow the arteries and reduce normal blood flow.

Cholesterol is often described as “good” and “bad.” High levels of good cholesterol help remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream, while high levels of bad cholesterol can contribute to plaque forming inside the arteries.

Common Symptoms

High cholesterol usually does not cause noticeable symptoms. Many people may have high cholesterol without realizing it until it is detected through a blood test.

Possible Causes

High cholesterol can develop due to several factors, including diet, lack of physical activity, smoking, excess body weight and certain medical conditions. Age, genetics and family history can also influence cholesterol levels.
