New Health Development: Why Vaccination Rates Matter – Lessons from Recent Measles Outbreaks

Recent public health reports have highlighted a concerning development in Canada: the country recently lost its measles elimination status after decades of successful vaccination programs. This change occurred after sustained outbreaks across several provinces, highlighting the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates within communities.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through coughing, sneezing, and close contact. Before widespread vaccination, measles infected millions of people worldwide each year and led to significant complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and death. Fortunately, the measles vaccine has been one of the most effective tools in modern medicine for preventing these outcomes.

Ontario had 2063 confirm cases in since October 2024.

Why Did Measles Return?

Health experts point to several contributing factors. Over the past few years, vaccination rates have declined in some communities. This has been partly due to disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic and partly due to growing vaccine hesitancy. When vaccination rates fall below about 95%, herd immunity weakens and outbreaks become more likely.

Measles spreads extremely easily. In fact, one infected person can spread the virus to 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people who are exposed. This is why maintaining strong community immunity through vaccination is so important.

Why Vaccines Remain Critical

Vaccines work by training the immune system to recognize and fight specific pathogens before they cause serious illness.

What This Means for Patients

For most Canadians, routine childhood vaccinations already provide protection against measles. However, adults who are unsure about their immunization history may benefit from reviewing their vaccine records with their family doctor.

Some situations where vaccination review may be recommended include:

  • Adults who never received two documented doses of the measles vaccine
  • Individuals planning international travel
  • Healthcare workers or individuals working in high-risk settings
  • People born after 1970 without documented vaccination

Ensuring your vaccines are up to date is one of the most effective ways to protect your health and prevent future outbreaks.

The Role of Primary Care

Family physicians play a key role in maintaining public health. During routine visits, doctors can review immunization history, answer questions about vaccine safety, and recommend appropriate vaccinations.

At Clockwork Health Group, we encourage patients to stay informed about preventative health measures. Vaccination remains one of the most powerful and cost-effective tools available to protect individuals, families, and communities from preventable diseases.
