Vaccination Season in Ontario: Protecting Yourself Against Respiratory Viruses

Each year, fall and winter bring an increase in respiratory illnesses across Ontario. Influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are the most common viruses circulating during this period. Public health authorities strongly recommend vaccination as the most effective way to reduce severe illness, hospitalization, and complications.

Seasonal Vaccines in Ontario

Ontario’s vaccination programs are designed to protect the population against several respiratory viruses. These include:

  • Influenza (flu) vaccine
  • COVID-19 booster vaccines
  • RSV vaccines for older adults and high-risk individuals

The province operates the Universal Influenza Immunization Program (UIIP), which provides free flu vaccines to everyone aged six months and older who lives, works, or studies in Ontario.

These vaccines are available through family doctors, pharmacies, and local public health clinics.

Why Seasonal Vaccination Matters

Respiratory viruses circulate more frequently during colder months because people spend more time indoors and viruses survive longer in cooler conditions. Annual vaccination helps reduce infection rates and protects vulnerable populations such as:

  • Adults over 65
  • Individuals with chronic conditions
  • Pregnant individuals
  • Residents of long-term care or retirement homes
  • Young children

Vaccination can also help reduce pressure on hospitals and healthcare services during peak respiratory virus season.

Influenza Vaccination

The influenza virus changes slightly every year, which is why the flu vaccine is updated annually.

RSV Vaccination

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) can cause serious illness in older adults and people with underlying health conditions. Ontario has recently expanded RSV prevention programs to include adults aged 75 and older, as well as certain high-risk individuals aged 60–74.

Vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of severe RSV infection.

COVID-19 Vaccines

COVID-19 vaccines continue to be recommended, particularly for individuals at higher risk of severe illness. National immunization guidance recommends vaccination for adults aged 65 and older, people living in congregate settings, and individuals with certain medical conditions.

When Should You Get Vaccinated?

Public health experts generally recommend receiving seasonal vaccines in the fall before respiratory virus activity peaks. However, vaccination can still be beneficial later in the season.

If you are unsure which vaccines are recommended for you, speak with your family physician or pharmacist.

At Clockwork Health Group, we encourage patients to stay up to date with seasonal vaccinations to protect both personal health and the health of the community.
