Viral Stomach Bug (Viral Gastroenteritis)
A viral stomach bug, also called viral gastroenteritis, is an infection of the stomach and intestines caused by viruses. It commonly leads to inflammation of the digestive tract and results in symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. The illness is contagious and can spread through close contact with infected individuals, contaminated food or water, or contact with contaminated surfaces.
Most cases are short-term and improve within a few days as the body clears the infection.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms of a viral stomach bug may include:
- diarrhea
- vomiting
- nausea
- stomach cramps or abdominal discomfort
- mild fever
- headache or body aches
- fatigue or feeling generally unwell
Symptoms often begin suddenly and may last several days.
Possible Causes
Viral gastroenteritis is usually caused by viruses that infect the digestive system. These viruses can spread easily from person to person, particularly in households, workplaces, schools or other settings where people are in close contact. Infection may occur through contaminated food or water, touching contaminated surfaces, or direct contact with an infected person.
